01 / OVERVIEW
About the project
BCAT is a website that brings together breast cancer awareness, screening, support and local services for Black African, Black Caribbean, Bangladeshi and Pakistani women living in East London. The platform was built to make these resources easier to find in one place, and to help reduce health inequalities in communities that are often underserved.
The project was financially supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK Limited through a sponsorship agreement. Novartis had no editorial control over the content. The work was delivered in partnership with One Newham, Wilma, The Health Creation Alliance and The Lime Project.
02 / THE CHALLENGE
The challenge
Information about breast cancer screening, support and services in the local area was scattered across many different places, which made it hard for women to find what they needed. One Newham came to us to build a single, trusted space that brought everything together and reflected the women it was made for.
03 / PROCESS
What we did
We started with research, looking at other breast cancer focused websites to understand what works and where the gaps are. From there, we built the full brand identity, designed the UI, and designed the website end to end alongside a developer.
For the visual identity, we used deep pink as the lead colour because it is widely recognised as the colour for breast cancer awareness. We kept the typography simple and readable using Open Sans and Poppins, so the site feels calm and approachable rather than clinical.
Photography was a real consideration. Many women were understandably not comfortable being photographed for a project on this topic, so we used carefully chosen AI generated imagery to represent women across different ages, backgrounds and life stages. This let us keep the site inclusive and human, without putting anyone in a position they did not want to be in.
The work was shaped by workshops and a dedicated working group running across three boroughs, with input from GP surgery staff, and organisations supporting women before and after treatment.
Alongside the website, we designed a simple printed toolkit. On the recommendation of the working group, it is being distributed not only through GP surgeries but also through local salons and shops, meeting women in the everyday spaces they already visit.
